How to Impede a Climate Crisis
“Yes, we can solve the climate crisis, we just have to [join the Church of Scientology] first.”
Traditional climate denial is rarely listened to nowadays, but there are other methods to prevent us from taking effective action. We may know what the problem is, the consequences, and what needs to be done, but we can still very easily be distracted.
Great climate distractions are shiny things that have nothing to do with reducing emissions or giving nature more space, but that will take longer to resolve than the climate crisis, and preferably are impractical, unfeasible, and/or unwanted.
The way to recognize a distraction is that it does not come in addition to the solution, stopping burning fossil carbon and giving nature more breathing space but instead of. And example alternatives to becoming “clear” in the Church of Scientology can be:
- One-child policy worldwide
- The dictatorship of the proletariat
- Thorium power plants or other untested technologies
- Neo-feudalism
- Circular economy
- Philosophy or cult of Y
- Eradicate or suppress nation or group Z
- Global veganism
- Pre-industrial society
- Collective suicide
- Moving to another planet or the astral plane
Some of these will happen. Some of these we should even work to make happen. But if someone says “first, do this” or “we cannot solve the climate crisis without this,” it is always a distraction they are presenting.
